How to remove information from google?

"Getting something out from Google" means different things to different people. We will explain how to request the deletion of information, but please read the following information carefully.

Step 1: Understanding the problem

You must answer the following two questions before attempting to delete your information:

1.       Delete information from Google or the web?

Do you want to remove the information only from Google search or from the web? Removing information from Google will not remove it from the web, and removing information from the web requires some additional steps to remove it from Google.

2.       Who controls the source page of the information?

Information in Google search results comes from one source (often, but not always, a web page). You must know the source of this content and who has control of that source to block or remove it.

  • Here are some examples of assets that you control:
    • Your Blogger Pages
    • website that you own (for example, Alain owns www.alaincorps247.com)
    • Wix or Wordpress site that you run
    • Google My Business entry that you created for your business
    • Your own social media profile on Twitter or Facebook
  • Here are some examples of fonts that you probably don't control:
    • A story about you on a newspaper website.
    • A blog post from someone else (even if it's an illustration or image you made, you don't control the page you live on)
    • Pinterest page that pinned a photo you took or a photo of yourself
    • Wikipedia article about you
    • The profile of someone else's social network on Twitter or Facebook.

Step 2: take action

You probably want your information from both Google search results and the web; you must handle these steps separately.

[alert icon="info-circle"]Protect or remove all URL variations of the content you want to hide, as in many cases different URLs can point to the same page, for example: example.com/puppies, example.com/PUPPIES and example.com / petchooser? pet = puppies. Find out how to find the correct URL to block.[/alert]

1.     Get information about Google search results

How you remove information from Google search results depends on whether or not you are in control of the page that hosts the information.

n  I control the website

If the content is on a website that you control or is managed by an account that you control (for example, on your Blogger page), or if you are the owner of the site verified in Google Search Console, here's how to remove your content from Google search results.

If the source page no longer exists (or is inaccessible) on the web

If the page the information came from is no longer on the web or is now protected by a connection, submit a URL removal request. (You must sign in with a Google account).

[error]First, check that the page has disappeared before doing this. You can verify by opening an incognito window in Chrome and trying to visit the page. If the page cannot be accessed, it will disappear.[/error]

If the information still exists on the web

If the page the information came from is still accessible on the web and does not require a login or noindex directive, follow these steps:

1.       Temporarily hide information from Google search by submitting a URL removal request. It will take effect in about a day, but it is only temporary (after about 90 days it will reappear in search results). You need to take the additional steps outlined below to permanently remove it from Google search results. To do this, you must be a verified site owner of the page in Search Console. We recommend that you remove the search results and cache page from your request.

2.       Permanently remove information from Google search results. To permanently remove your page or file from Google Search:

Block access to it, as described in Get information from the web section.

OR

Add a noindex tag or header to your page. Important: When using this method, make sure your page is not blocked by a robots.txt file.

OR

Remove an image from search results using the robots.txt file to block the image or page that hosts it. Again, this is to delete only one image; not the whole page, from the search results. If you are using the robots.txt file, the page, but not the image, may appear in search results. To block the hosting page from search results, you must use one of the other two techniques mentioned above.

3         [Optional] Remove or limit access to your information. See Obtaining information from the web. If you don't, linked users can still access your content. It also prevents your information from appearing in a search engine that may violate the robots.txt or noindex file, or is linked to a website.

n  I do not control the website

The removal process depends on whether the information is still visible on the page where Google found it:

o   The content no longer exists on the source web page

If the content is no longer available, you can ask Google to remove it from Google search results using the Remove Obsolete Content tool:

1         This request only works for pages and images that have already been updated or removed from the web.

2         Please use the correctURL in your request. If you use the wrong URL, the result will not be removed.

3         Add a separate request for each URL found in Google web search results and image search results.

o   The content still exists on the source web page

1         Contact the website owner and ask them to remove the page. Remember to request the removal of all copies of the information on all your pages, as well as any images.

2         If you are unable to contact the site owner or if they do not wish to remove the information:

·         If the information is on a Google property, such as YouTube or Blogger, see the Google Property Removaltroubleshooter.

·         If the information is on non-Google property, please use the Third Party Page Removal Troubleshooter.

3         After the source content is removed, remove the information from Google search results using the RemoveObsolete Content tool. You should request the removal of the URL for every page or image that appears in Google search results.

2.     Get information on the web

If you want information to be removed from the web (and not just from Google), you will need to remove or block the page.

If you only delete information from Google, but don't delete or block the source page, it won't prevent someone with a link from visiting the page. People can link to your unlisted page because they visited it before, or someone sent it to them, or because other pages link to it.

If you control the page

  • Password protect your file or page.
  • Delete your file or page.
  • For Google properties:
    • Google Shopping and some other properties - Here you candisable search results for specific Google properties.
    • Company information: You can edit the company information that you added in Google My Business.
    • Other Google Properties: To remove content from other Google properties, search your product's help documentation for instructions on how to remove it.

If you don't control the page

  • Try to contact the owner ofthe page and ask them to remove the content. Then remove the information from Google search results as described in Content no longer exists on source web page.
  • For pages hosted by Google properties (such as Google Play Music, Google Ads, or YouTube), try thistroubleshooting tool.

More information

I object to something I found in google search. Can I take it apart?

Remember, the Internet is a big place and you may not like or disagree with everything you see. Google's goal is to identify what information on the web is relevant to user queries, not to determine if that content is illegal in any way.

However, if you think this is really a problem, here are some options:

How to remove or update information from the Google dynamic panel in the search results?

Find out how to update a dynamic Google dashboard. Note that the information in the dynamic dashboard can come from various sources. For legal requests, see here.

How do I get a video or post on YouTube, Blogger, or other Google properties?

See Obtaining information from the web dection.

Why can't I use the robots.txt file to lock my file?

If you are using a robots.txt file on your website, you can tell Google not to crawl a page. However, if Google finds a link to your page on another site, with descriptive text, we may generate a search result from that. If you've included a noindex tag on the page, Google won't see it because Google must crawl (search) the page to see that tag, but Google won't retrieve your page if the robots.txt file is locked there. So you need to allow Google to crawl the page and see the noindex tag or header. It sounds counterintuitive, but you have to let Google try to retrieve the page and fail (due to password protection) or see the noindex tag to make sure it is omitted from the search results.

This does not apply to images; For images, the robots.txt file is the correct way to block images from search results.
